I'm with Teresa - I'm sure I must have missed you mentioning which quilts you were showing. Can you show us again, please?

Do you think the people would mind if I turned up with my stuff and just moved on in to that old house? I'd pee in a can, no problem. When I was small we had to pee in a bucket during the night at my Grandma's so I'm sure I could cope with a pretty pot like that one ;)

Once more YLI thread arrives (cos i have done half with the stupid thread so i have to finsh i!) i'll be taking my quilt off the frame. I'm dreading seeing just how much i have to redo! I think that some machines just don't like it.

I'm glad that you were able to get your quilt finished even though it sounded like a ton of extra work. Unfortunately there are some machines that simply do not like free motion quilting no matter what you try to do. My old Husqvarna was like that. It was ok for regular sewing and piecing but the free motion stuff forget it. What it really messed up on was curves. I would clean the machine, change needles, thread, everything and still it would not do free motion. After several attemps I decided it wasn't worth the headache or aggrevation.

I too do not like free-motion quilting. Well, I like the look of it but not my attempts at it. I really think it is a magic think that requires the ABSOLUTELY perfect match between needle, thread, machine, and quilter. I haven't yet attained that magic and I'm not sure I have the patience, perserverance, mental fortitude, or whatever it takes to get there. I have ripped out many free-motion stitches and replaced them with straightline stitches so I much admire your abilty to stick with it.

I've decided that I enjoy the sewing process and can adequately quilt without using free-motion so will just avoid that little wrinkle altogether.

it would sure be nice if there was a reliable way to diagnose a sewing machine problem online. your first instinct was mine also - the needle is usually the culprit on something like this. however, dragging something as heavy as a quilt around under a domestic machine can send a mildly tempermental timing right off. do you know how to check your own timing?

as to the quilt you have going now, send it to me! i'll quilt it for you for nothing and send it back - serious offer. email me if you're interested.

Oh no! I was going to suggest changing the needle and then completely rethreading it (remove the spool of thread then place it back on the machine). Also, pull out the bobbin then re-seat it. Hang in there -- I know from experience that this is So. Frustrating.
